Recommended Manufacturers

There is a huge variety of home gyms available, and there are a huge variety of reasons someone might want a homge gym: from a quick workout to a full on workout, home gyms today vary greatly in design and purpose. However, through it all, some brands rise the top and have a strong following because of the quality of the product. The manufacturers we would recommend:

1. Weider Fitness

The Weider name is most known for its founder, Joe Weider, and his popular publication "Muscle And Fitness" Magazine which has been the most popular body building magazine for over 30 years. While a publishing empire, Weider also launched a very popular quality line of both nutrtitional supplements and fitness products (official Weider Fitness site). The Weider team, now under the team Icon Health And Fitness (which also owns Weslo, Proform, NordicTrack, and other popular fitness brands) and continues to put out quality affordable workout equipment. Included in its popular home gyms are the Weider Power Tower and the Weider Ultimate Body Works Gym

2. Bowflex Home Gyms

Bowflex (official site) took the world by storm in the 1980's with its revolutionary new universal home gym system: The Bowflex 2000x. Instead of using heavy machine weights, the Bowflex design utilized tension rods to give workout enthusiasts a full workout with heavy resistance in a sleek apparatus. Today, Bowflex still remains a favorite among many. While most of us on staff personally do not like Bowflex, we know they are very popular and especially handy for beginner and intermediate weightlifters. One of their most popular designs is the Bowflex PR1000 Home Gym.

3. TRX

TRX Suspension Trainer Basic Kit with Door Anchor Home Gym Pic TRX has recently taken the workout community by storm with its innovative "Suspension" workout kits. Designed by military for use by those who travel often and may not know when they will hit an actual gym again. The TRX Suspension workout kits are very flexible and numerous for those looking for a great workout! We just recommend that because of how these are used, it is very easy to use them the wrong way which also means charges for a coach or trainer. By far their most popular product is the TRX Suspension Trainer Basic Kit

Recommended Models

Here are some recommended individual models.

1. Iron Gym Total Body Fitness Kit Complete 4-Piece Kit Home Gym

Iron Gym Total Body Fitness Kit Complete 4-Piece Kit Home Gym Pic
  • 4 out of 5 stars
  • Inexpensive
  • Very sturdy
  • Easy and convenient workout of major muscle groups
  • Reasonably compact for storage
We recommend this first because it can appeal to all levels beginner to intermediate. The main appeal is that this is the best designed chin up bar we have ever used. So if you want to do some quick reps of pull-ups this is the one to get. Inexpensive priced so it is a great addition to any home. You can also do hanging leg raises as well. The push up station is not too revolutionary- we in fact still prefer regular pushups. The jump rope is another mostly non-factor. Really we love it for the pull-up station.

2. Weider Ultimate Body Works Home GymWeider Ultimate Body Works Home Gym Pic

  • 4.5 out of 5 stars
  • Moderately Inexpensive
  • Easy and light fold up storage
  • Utilizes body weight for exercise
  • Includes resistance bands and incline change for more resistance
This is a fantastic (and inexpensive!) machine for beginning to intermediates that work out. The multiple cable/pulleys make it easy to work out many major muscle groups using your body weight for resistance. While probably not ideal for those very experienced and very strong, it is a great workout tool for just about everyone else.

3. Weider Power Tower

Weider Power Tower Pic
  • 4.5 out of 5 stars
  • Moderately Inexpensive
  • Workout stations for major muscle groups
  • Durable steel construction
  • Somewhat portable, fairly light for its size
We love this for the same reasons we love the Iron Gym Total Body Fitness Home Gym: very convenient for workouts, gives you great major muscle group workouts, plus small footprint. We really love the Power Tower mostly because of the dipping station. Beats pushups for heavier workouts. Add a weighted belt and you have a legitimate workout station to give you really hard workouts for those workout vets.

4. Bowflex PR1000 Home Gym

  • 4.5 out of 5 stars
  • Moderately Expensive
  • Over 30 exercises available
  • Power rods provide up to 210 pounds resistance
  • Includes rowing machine
Our main beef with the Bowflex which is similar to most machine weights is that it does not feel as natural as free weights. That being said, for a best home gym, sometimes you prioritize having enough resistance as well as being able to target any and all muscle groups. Not to mention it is fairly easy to move. So if you're looking for a full workout with a traditional gym feel, this one is one of the best.

5. Total Gym XLS Trainer Home Gym

  • 4.5 out of 5 stars
  • Moderately Expensive
  • Can support up to 400lbs user, very durable for a gravity based home gym
  • Includes accessories to increase number of exercises available
  • Improved cable and pulley mechanism
